Little Women: The Musical December 4 - 13, 2009Book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland. Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, this story focuses on the four March sisters - feisty, tomboyish, aspiring author Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth - and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army Chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio. Appropriate for all audiences. When George, the hilarious farmer they rent the house from, tells stories about a terrible murder that once took place in the farmhouse and the ghost that reputedly stalks the night, Jan's imagination gets fired up. The situation gets even worse when Laura, Greg's beautiful but manipulative sister arrives. Soon Jan finds herself tormented by strange sounds in the night, and visions of the vengeful ghost. Is she having another breakdown? Is someone trying to drive her mad? When she tries to defend herself from this apparition, events take an unexpected turn in a night of unimaginable suspense. Appropriate for audiences 13 and older. Jesus Christ Superstar May 14 - 23, 2010By Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. This rock opera highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The story is based on the canonical gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with Jesus and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. Twentieth-century attitudes and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of the events. Stage and film productions accordingly feature many intentional anachronisms. Appropriate for ages 13 and older.
