Set Construction Crew Chief

The Set Construction Crew Chief is responsible for the supervision of and participation in the construction of production sets as specified by the Scenic Designer. This person should have a working knowledge of construction tools and techniques, as well as a clear understanding of theatrical applications of these techniques. Some creative methods may need to be used to efficiently and effectively help design and vision be realized. Additional job requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Read and interpret blueprint designs provided by Scenic Designer
  • Work with Director and Stage Manager to determine construction priorities
  • Read rehearsal reports and attend production meetings
  • Reuse materials already at the theatre
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working at heights up to 15’
  • Work within a budget, obtain approval for purchases
  • Lead, supervise, and work with a team of seasoned volunteers
  • Be available for all build dates
  • Ensure completion of set 2 weeks prior to opening night
  • Construct sets that are light, durable, safe, and versatile
  • Use materials in such a way that they can be reused
  • Strike set with crew of volunteers following closing performance

Crews typically get roughly 4 weeks to complete a set build. Position is paid on a per-production basis once set is complete to director and scenic designer’s satisfaction.
