August Wilson's The Piano Lesson Comes to Saginaw

Pit & Balcony Community Theatre is proud to partner with EVOC Productions' to present August Wilson's The Piano Lesson for two performances on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Pit & Balcony Community Theatre in downtown Saginaw.

Widely regarded as one of August Wilson's greatest plays, The Piano Lesson is a moving drama about family, legacy, and the enduring impact of history. Set in Pittsburgh in 1936, the story follows Boy Willie as he attempts to sell a treasured family piano to purchase land in Mississippi. His sister, Berniece, refuses to let it go, believing the piano—covered in carvings that tell their family's journey from slavery to freedom—is too important to lose. Their conflict explores powerful themes of heritage, identity, and the choices that shape future generations.

This special production also celebrates the official launch of EVOC Productions, a new Black and woman-owned theatre and film company founded by director Glecia Wright-Tatum. Pit & Balcony Community Theatre is honored to host this production and support EVOC's mission of creating bold artistic experiences while amplifying Black voices and stories through theatre and film.

VIP Launch Reception & Performance Experience

For those looking to make the evening even more memorable, a limited number of VIP Launch Reception + Performance Tickets are available.

The VIP experience begins from 5:00–6:30 p.m. at Signature 808, a Black-owned café and creative space located just steps from the theatre. Guests will enjoy complimentary food and refreshments, a photo station, and an exclusive conversation with EVOC Productions Founder and The Piano Lesson director Glecia Wright-Tatum, who will discuss the production, the inspiration behind EVOC Productions, and the company's vision for the future.

Following the reception, VIP guests will cross the street to Pit & Balcony Community Theatre, where reserved seats will be waiting for the performance.
